【使える英語表現】日本語の「要するに」は英語で何て言う？

日本語でよく「要するに」と言うけれど、英語では何て言うのだろう。

「要するに」は、英語では、いろいろな表現があるが、その１つとしてよく使われるのが「in other words」であろう。

今回は、「要するに」の英語表現、その英語の意味、「word」を使った他の英語表現を紹介したい。

「要するに」の英語表現

in other words：要するに

In other words, you don’t like it.
(要するに、君はそれを好きじゃないってことだね)

「in other words」の意味

Longman 辞書によると、「in other words」の意味は以下のとおり。

in other words: used when you are expressing an idea or opinion again in a different and usually simpler way
(別の、より簡潔な言い方で、再度、考えや意見を述べるときに使用される)

「word」を使った他の英語表現

◯ in plain words：率直に言えば

 In plain words you are bone lazy.
(率直に言って、君は根っからの怠け者だ)

◯ word by word：一語一語

If you translate word by word , sometimes you cannot make sense.
(一語一語、翻訳したら、意味が通らない場合がある)

◯ in word and deed： 言行ともに

He is honest in word and deed.
(彼は、言行ともに正直だ)
