【使える英語表現】「知らんぷりする」は、英語で何て言う？

日本語でよく「知らんぷりする」と言うけど、英語で何ていうのだろうか？

辞書で調べると、「pretending not  to know」などと出ているが、もっと口語的な表現がある。

以下の例文は、アメリカに住んでいた時に直接、アメリカ人から聞いた話なので、紹介したい。

「知らんぷりする」の英語表現

play dumb: 知らんぷりする

【例文】
A lot of Americans play dumb when they got caught by cops for speeding.
They say, “I don’t know” or “I don’t understand”.
(スピード違反で警察に捕まったとき、知らんぷりするアメリカ人は多いよ。「知らないな」とか、「よく分からないんだけど」って言うんだ)

「play dumb」の定義

Oxford language 辞書によると、定義は以下のとおり。

pretend to be unintelligent or unaware in order to deceive someone or gain an advantage.
(誰かを欺いたり、優位に立つために、愚かな知らない振りをすること)

定義からすると、相手を欺く目的があるので、よい意味では使われないことが分かる。

「play」を使った他の表現

○ play hooky: 学校をサボる 

They played hooky and went fishing.
(彼らは、学校をサボって、魚釣りに行った)

○ play pool: ビリヤードをする

Do you want to play pool with me ?
(一緒にビリヤードしたい？)

○ play a role: 役割を果たす
