日本語でよく「降順」、「昇順」と言うけれど、英語では何て言うのだろう。

英語では、降順が「descending order」、昇順が「ascending order」と言う。

この用語は特に、Excel の表などで出てくるけど、いつも「あれ、どっちがどっちだっかな」と迷ってしまう。例えば、そのデータの並び替えは、降順は「Z→A」(値の大きいものから小さいもの)、昇順は「A→Z」(値の小さいものから大きいもの) というルールになっている。

「降順」と「昇順」の英語表現

降順：descending order

The array is sorted in descending order like [5, 4, 3, 2, 1].
(その配列は、[5, 4, 3, 2, 1] などと降順でソートされている)

昇順：ascending order

The above numbers are arranged in ascending order as [0, 2, 4, 6, 8].
(上記の番号は、[0, 2, 4, 6, 8] と昇順で並べられている)

「descending order」と「ascending order」の意味

Longman 辞書によると、「descending order」と「ascending order」の意味は以下のとおり。

in descending order (降順)：
numbers, choices etc that are in descending order are arranged from the highest or most important to the lowest or least important
(降順の番号、選択肢などは、重要度が高い順に並べられる)

in ascending order (昇順)：
if a group of things are arranged in ascending order, each thing is higher, or greater in amount, than the one before it
(物事のグループを昇順で並べると、高さや大きさが低い順に並べられる)

つまり、数値や重要度において、降順は高い順に並べられ、昇順は低い順に並べられる。

覚え方は、降順は、階段の上から下に降りるイメージ (3階→2階→1階)、昇順は、階段の下から上に上がるイメージ (1階→２階→３階) で、いいかと思う。
