【英語の違い】must と have to の違いとは?

musthave to は、よく「~しなければならない」とだけ教えられるが、微妙なニュアンスの違いまでは分からない。そこで、英語を母国語としている国のサイトを見てみると、その違いが明確になるかと思う。

Must means “really should or else it will be bad for you”, it expresses an obligation forced by the speaker. Have / Has to expresses general obligations. When we are talking about another person’s obligation we use have to, too. We use have to when the obligation comes from outside.

must と have to の違い

上記の説明によると、ポイントは、以下のとおり。
must は、話し手の強制的な義務を表し、have to は、他の人の義務について話しているときや、外部からの義務の場合に使う。

例文 (ニュアンス)

なるほど、こういうニュアンスの違いがあるので、must より have to の方が柔らかくなり、日常会話では、have to が頻繁に使われるんだなと分かる。

In everyday English, people usually say someone has to or has got to do something rather than say they must do something, which can sound slightly formal or emphatic: Everyone has to wear a seat belt. I‘ve got to go at four o’clock. Do I have to pay now?

Longman 辞書の説明でも、やはり、日常会話では、must よりも have to を使うのが一般的と書いてある。mustの方がどちらかと言えば、堅苦しく(formal) 感じたり、強い口調 (emphatic)に聞こえるとのこと。
