【英語の違い】英語の「college」と「university」の違いは何？ 「college」の使える表現も紹介！！

英語の「college」 と 「university」の違いって何だろうか？　日本語では、どちらも「大学」と訳しそうだが、英語の語源を見ると、微妙にニュアンスが違うようだ。

そこで、今回は、英語の 「college」と「university」の違い、それに関連する英語表現を紹介したい。

英語の 「college」と 「university」の違い

Marriam-Webster によると、「college」の定義は以下のとおり。

a self-governing constituent body of a university offering living quarters and sometimes instruction but not granting degrees
(居住区や場合によって教育を提供するが学位は授与しない大学の自治機関)

an independent institution of higher learning offering a course of general studies leading to a bachelor’s degree
(学士号が得られる一般的な研究コースを提供する、独立した高等教育機関)

a part of a university offering a specialized group of courses
(専門的なコース群を提供する大学の一部)

次に「university」の定義は以下のとおり。

one made up of an undergraduate division which confers bachelor’s degrees and a graduate division which comprises a graduate school and professional schools each of which may confer master’s degrees and doctorates
(学士号を授与する学部の区分と、大学院および専門職系大学院 (それぞれ修士号、博士号を授与する) で構成される大学院の区分)

つまり、 collegeは、大学院を含まない単科大学や専門学校の意味合いがあるのに対して、university は、単科大学+大学院を含む総合大学というニュアンスがあるが、必ずしも、college = 日本語の「単科大学」、university = 日本語の「総合大学」とはならないことに注意しよう。
