日本語では、よく「そのとおり」という言い方をするが、英語で何と言うのだろう。

英語では、いろいろなバリエーションがあり、一番オーソドックスなのは、やはり「You’re right」、「Exactly」、「Absolutely」だが、口語では「hit the nail on the head」というカジュアルな英語表現も使われる。

今回は、「そのとおり」の英語表現、その英語の意味、「そのとおり」に関連した他の英語表現を紹介したい。

「そのとおり」の英語表現

hit the nail on the head：そのとおり

You hit the nail right on the head.
(まったく、そのとおりだね)

Longman 辞書によると、「hit the nail on the head」の意味は以下のとおり。

hit the nail on the head: informal used to say that what someone has said is exactly right
(カジュアルな英語：人が言ったことがまったく正しいときに使う)

○ agree with：～に同意する

I agree with you.
(君の意見に賛成だよ)

○ for sure：確かに

That’s for sure.
(それは確かだ)

○ you can say that again (イディオム): 言ったことに対して完全な同意を示すときに使用

You can say that again.
(そのとおり)
